Boiling Springs was settled before 1737 and formally founded in 1845, a village that grew up around the natural springs feeding what's now called Children's Lake. Roughly 30 springs bubble up from subterranean caves to deliver about 22 million gallons of water a day at a constant 53 degrees, and that water once powered the nearby Carlisle Iron Works, one of the oldest iron furnaces in Pennsylvania, dating to around 1762. The Boiling Springs Grist Mill has stood on record since at least 1785, and the village's 19th-century architecture, from Second Empire to Queen Anne to Federal-style homes, still lines streets like Third Street today.
The village also carries a deeper history than its scenic lake suggests. In the 19th century, Boiling Springs was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and Daniel Kaufman's home served as a safe haven for freedom-seekers making their way north. By the late 1800s, the lake and its surroundings had become a popular destination in their own right, drawing visitors for boating, fishing, and a lakeside trolley park that operated from 1895 to 1930. The limestone Memorial Clock Tower, dedicated in 1956 to honor fallen veterans, still stands at the north end of the lake today.
Boiling Springs' modern identity is closely tied to the Appalachian Trail, which runs directly alongside Children's Lake through the center of the village, earning Boiling Springs official designation as an Appalachian Trail Community. Nearby Center Point Knob once marked the Trail's original halfway point when it was completed in 1937. Between the lake, the Trail, and the historic district's older stonework and mature trees, a lot of outdoor space here is shaped by the terrain and history around it as much as by the homeowner's own plans.
