Cumberland County was created in 1750 from part of Lancaster County, making it one of the oldest counties in south-central Pennsylvania, and its history runs through Carlisle, the county seat, laid out the following year and named for Carlisle, England. Carlisle Barracks, established in 1757, is one of the oldest continuously operated military installations in the country and now houses the U.S. Army War College. Dickinson College followed in 1783, chartered by Benjamin Rush as the first college founded after American independence, and named for Founding Father John Dickinson.
The county saw its own share of Civil War history. Confederate forces occupied Carlisle twice in 1863, shelling the town and using Dickinson College's campus buildings as a headquarters and field hospital. That same summer, Confederate cavalry moved through Mechanicsburg and skirmished at Sporting Hill, in what's remembered as the northernmost engagement of the entire Gettysburg Campaign. Artifacts, photographs, and documents from that era, and from the county's broader history, are preserved at the Cumberland County Historical Society in downtown Carlisle.
