Larger rural lots are common in Dickinson Township, giving a paver patio room to function as its own destination rather than just an extension off the back door. Built to hold up through years of regular use, it turns unused acreage into a dedicated spot for gathering. Adding a fire pit rounds out the space for evenings once the weather cools.

Rolling terrain near Opossum Lake makes erosion control a real consideration for some Dickinson Township properties, and a retaining wall addresses that while also leveling out room for raised planting beds. It can double as a way to separate one part of the yard from another too, such as a dining area kept apart from a nearby patio or fire pit.

Larger rural properties in Dickinson Township often sit without nearby streetlights, which makes a well-placed LED low-voltage lighting plan do more work than it would in a denser neighborhood. Whether it's for hosting guests or just sitting outside for a drink, the right layout keeps the space usable and visible well after dark instead of fading into open darkness once the sun sets.

Rural properties in Dickinson Township, whether working farms or wooded lots near Opossum Lake, call for a different maintenance approach than a typical borough-sized yard. Seasonal cleanups, mulching, mowing, edging, and plant trimming get scheduled around the size and character of the specific property rather than a standard route.

Dickinson Township, PA

Dickinson Township was established on April 17, 1785, by decree of the Cumberland County Court of Quarter Sessions, making it one of the county's original townships. At the time, it was the largest township in the county, stretching from South Middleton on the east to Newtown on the west, before Penn Township was carved out of its western half in 1860. The earliest settlers were mostly Scotch-Irish farmers, drawn by the fertile soil of the Cumberland Valley floor.

The township's geography splits it in two. The northern half sits in the open farmland of the Cumberland Valley, while the southern half rises into South Mountain and Piney Mountain, both wooded and considerably less developed. Small unincorporated communities like Mooredale, Barnitz, and Goodyear grew up scattered through that terrain, tied historically to grist mills and farming rather than any single town center.

More than two centuries later, that same rural, two-part character has held on. Working farms and wooded acreage still make up a large share of the township's land, and landscape projects here typically get built around that existing scale, long driveways, open pasture edges, and mature woodland, rather than trying to impose a suburban layout on land that was never platted for one.

“Red Rock has completed many projects for us over the past 6 years. From installing concrete edging, removing a tree, planting new trees, lawn reseeding and dressing, we have been very pleased with their services. They are very pleasant, honest and always show up on time for service. This is our first season having their organic lawn service, so we are looking forward to a gorgeous yard. We have many more projects planned for them! “
