New Cumberland sits on the west bank of the Susquehanna River at its confluence with Yellow Breeches Creek, a location that shaped the community long before it carried its current name. The settlement was known at various points as Shawneetown, Chartiers Landing, Lowther Manor, and Haldeman's Town before the U.S. Post Office renamed it New Cumberland in 1827 to avoid confusion with Cumberland, Maryland. The borough was formally incorporated in 1831, and the historic downtown along Bridge and Market Streets still reflects that early 19th-century layout.
The river and creek made New Cumberland a natural shipping point, and the town grew up around that trade. Lumber rafted downriver supported early sawmills and a grain mill, and the opening of the York and Cumberland Railroad in 1851 connected the borough to larger markets, ending the era of freight wagons and turnpike traffic. By the late 1800s, woolen mills, carpet and nail factories, and a growing retail district had diversified the local economy well beyond its riverfront origins, and the population grew from a few hundred residents to the thousands who call it home today.
New Cumberland's present-day character still carries that history forward. The historic district includes buildings dating to the early 1800s, and a self-guided walking tour developed with the Cumberland County Historical Society leads visitors past 48 sites within the original 1831 borough limits, including the West Shore Theater. Each fall, the community gathers at Borough Park, built on the site of the town's old mills, for the New Cumberland Apple Festival. It's a place where riverside charm and small-town routine sit side by side, and where outdoor space often has to work around a slope, a creek line, or an older lot's existing grade.
